STEP 1: Define your brand strategy

First things first: Why do you do what you do? It’s a simple enough question, right? You’d be surprised by how many business leaders draw a blank when we ask them. Knowing why your company exists is the crucial first step to building a sustainable brand strategy.

Here are a few helpful questions to ask to find your WHY:

  • What does your audience need?
  • What makes your business different from others?
  • How does your company operate on a daily basis?

STEP 2: Create your brand messaging

Now that you know why you do what you do, it’s time to think about how you can convey that message to others. Even the best brand mission is useless if it’s not approachable to your target audience.

So, how do you figure out your messaging?

  • Set up clear personas that outline who your audience is, what they need and care about, what they sound like, and what they want from you.
  • Define what your brand voice should sound like. Are there words you don’t want to use, or some you definitely need to include? Do you want to sound serious, informal, exclusive, or professional?
  • What is your core message as a brand? What’s the one thing you want people to know about you and what you offer?

STEP 3: Shape your visual identity

Once you have your message and position, you can move on to the visual elements of your brand. In its simplest form, a visual identity is what you look like. It’s the first thing your audience will notice about you, so paying attention to the design elements you use is key.

Here are a few basic pointers to get you started:

  • What are your brand colours or shades?
  • What is the main font you’ll use across your brochures, website, and banners?
  • What should people think when they see your brand for the first time? Find examples of great brands you want to emulate and use this as a starting point for inspiration.

STEP 4: Apply your brand

Congratulations, you have your brand! After finalising your voice, visual identity, and key messaging, you can focus your attention on applying these elements to your business. You can make this step as big or as small as you choose, but here are a few key elements for a successful brand application:

  • A new website reflecting your new design and voice
  • An optimised LinkedIn page that highlights your brand
  • Brand packs and guidelines to use for internal communication
  • New sales collaterals like brochures, guides, and pamphlets

STEP 5: Launch your brand

All that work has come to this: launching your new brand into your network. This is where things get really fun. We’re talking office revamps, social media launches, company merch, and launch parties. Depending on budget and scope, this step is where you get your name out there and show your clients what they can expect from your brand moving forward.
